Participants in the Faculty Mentoring Communities (FMC) program are mentored in small groups by teams of Distinguished Mentors from across the university.
Distinguished Mentors are established and respected scholars and researchers, recognized mentors of students or faculty in their discipline, highly regarded teachers, willing to learn and share, and who can speak to Mason’s values and mission. We look for Distinguished Mentors who represent, broadly speaking, the diversity of our incoming faculty and who are comfortable facilitating and working with individuals across disciplines. Applicants should be tenured faculty.
The application for Distinguished Mentors for the upcoming academic year is open. Mentors attend approximately five meetings each semester with their assigned incoming faculty participants, in addition to regular planning sessions to provide support. We are seeking a total of nine Distinguished Mentors from across the disciplines and there is a modest stipend for your participation.
Interested faculty should submit the following information in a single document (no more than two pages):
- Your name, discipline, and academic affiliations
- Statement about your beliefs about what makes a good mentor
- Brief description of any relevant experience that you have mentoring faculty and/or why you think you would be a good mentor
- Information about your experiences (teaching, research, or other) collaborating with other faculty in cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary, or interdisciplinary work

The commitment for the program is two semesters, and there are approximately five meetings of the Faculty Mentoring Communities each semester. Additional planning sessions occur regularly to ensure continuity and provide support. There is a modest stipend provided to the Distinguished Mentors for their leadership and participation.
Our COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey results indicated additional mentoring as a need among faculty across all ranks and appointment types. This program is one strategy to address the needs of our incoming tenure-line faculty and affords Distinguished Mentors the opportunity to further develop their leadership and mentoring skills.
